50 TOPIK Grammar Patterns Every Test-Taker Should Know

Grammar patterns are the scaffolding of Korean. You can know a thousand vocabulary words, but if you can't recognize how they connect in a sentence, TOPIK will eat you alive. The listening audio moves fast, reading passages get dense, and the writing section demands that you produce correct grammar on the spot.
This list covers 50 patterns that show up repeatedly across TOPIK I and TOPIK II. They're organized by level so you can focus on what matches your target score. Each pattern includes the structure, what it means, and an example sentence so you can see it in action.
No fluff — just the patterns, how they work, and where they'll show up on the test.

TOPIK I Patterns (Levels 1-2)

These are the building blocks. If you're taking TOPIK I, every single one of these will appear on your test. If you're taking TOPIK II, you still need these — they're assumed knowledge.
1. -아/어요 (Present tense, polite)
Structure: Verb stem + 아/어요
