Your KTX ticket shows several numbers, and the departure board adds a few more. Start by matching three things: 열차번호 (train number), 승강장 (platform), and 호차 (car number).
Before you board, check the destination and train number on the screen. On the platform, move to the marked area for your car. Then find the seat printed beside 좌석 on your ticket.

The train-ticket words to find first

Korean
Pronunciation
Meaning
출발역
chul-bal-lyeok
departure station
도착역
do-chak-yeok
arrival station
출발시각
chul-bal-si-gak
departure time
열차번호
yeol-cha beon-ho
train number
승강장
seung-gang-jang
platform
호차
ho-cha
car number
좌석
jwa-seok
seat
If the ticket says 8호차 12A, go to car 8 and find seat 12A. Don't confuse 열차번호 with 호차. One identifies the train service; the other identifies the car you sit in.
For current reservations and train details, use the official KORAIL reservation service rather than a saved schedule from an older trip.

Match the departure board to your ticket

Korean
Pronunciation
Meaning
출발
chul-bal
departure
도착
do-chak
arrival
행선지
haeng-seon-ji
destination
열차
yeol-cha
train
타는 곳
ta-neun got
boarding place / platform
승차
seung-cha
boarding
Look for the row with your departure time and destination. Then check the train number. A destination alone isn't enough when several trains use the same route.
타는 곳 is a reader-friendly label for where you board. 승강장 is the platform itself. You may see either on signs and screens.

Delay, change, or waiting

Korean
Pronunciation
Meaning
지연
ji-yeon
delay
변경
byeon-gyeong
change
대기
dae-gi
waiting
운행
un-haeng
operation / service
운행 중지
un-haeng jung-ji
service stopped
If 지연 appears beside your train, check the updated time. If you see 변경, look for what changed: the time, platform, or another detail.
Don't guess from the color of the notice. Show your ticket to station staff and ask.

Ask where to board

Korean
Pronunciation
Meaning
이 열차 어디서 타요?
i yeol-cha eo-di-seo ta-yo?
Where do I board this train?
몇 번 승강장이에요?
myeot beon seung-gang-jang-i-e-yo?
Which platform is it?
이쪽 맞아요?
i-jjok ma-ja-yo?
Is this the right way?
이 기차 맞아요?
i gi-cha ma-ja-yo?
Is this the right train?
이 표 좀 봐 주세요.
i pyo jom bwa ju-se-yo
Please check this ticket.
Show the ticket while you speak. 이쪽 맞아요? is useful when you're already walking toward a platform and want a quick confirmation.
You may hear:
Korean
Pronunciation
Meaning
5번 승강장으로 가세요.
o-beon seung-gang-jang-eu-ro ga-se-yo
Go to platform 5.
아래로 내려가세요.
a-rae-ro nae-ryeo-ga-se-yo
Go downstairs.
반대편이에요.
ban-dae-pyeo-ni-e-yo
It's on the opposite side.
아직 안 나왔어요.
a-jik an na-wa-sseo-yo
It hasn't appeared yet.
Listen for the number and direction first. If you miss the rest, repeat the number as a question: 5번이요?

Find the correct car before the train arrives

Platforms may mark where each car will stop. Match your ticket's 호차 to the sign on the platform or train door.
Korean
Pronunciation
Meaning
8호차 어디예요?
pal ho-cha eo-di-ye-yo?
Where is car 8?
몇 호차예요?
myeot ho-cha-ye-yo?
Which car is it?
이쪽이 8호차 맞아요?
i-jjo-gi pal ho-cha ma-ja-yo?
Is this the area for car 8?
제 자리가 어디예요?
je ja-ri-ga eo-di-ye-yo?
Where is my seat?
Boarding the correct car saves you from moving through the train with luggage. If you enter the wrong car, don't panic. Check the car number inside and ask 8호차 어디로 가요?: "Which way is car 8?"

Seat words inside the train

Korean
Pronunciation
Meaning
좌석
jwa-seok
seat
창가
chang-ga
window side
통로
tong-no
aisle
순방향
sun-bang-hyang
forward-facing direction
역방향
yeok-bang-hyang
backward-facing direction
자유석
ja-yu-seok
unreserved seating
지정석
ji-jeong-seok
reserved seat
Ticket products and train layouts differ, so follow what your ticket says rather than assuming any open seat is available.
If someone is in your assigned seat, show the ticket and say:
죄송한데요. 제 좌석이 여기예요.
Excuse me. This is my seat.
The other passenger may also have read the car or seat number incorrectly. Keep the tone neutral and compare tickets.

Announcement words worth recognizing

Korean
Pronunciation
Meaning
곧 출발합니다
got chul-bal-ham-ni-da
It will depart soon.
승차해 주시기 바랍니다
seung-cha-hae ju-si-gi ba-ram-ni-da
Please board.
문이 닫힙니다
mu-ni da-chim-ni-da
The doors are closing.
출발이 지연되고 있습니다
chul-ba-ri ji-yeon-doe-go i-sseum-ni-da
Departure is delayed.
승강장이 변경되었습니다
seung-gang-jang-i byeon-gyeong-doe-eo-sseum-ni-da
The platform has changed.
You don't need the whole announcement. Listen for the train number or destination plus 출발, 지연, or 변경. Then check the screen again.

A complete platform check

You: 죄송한데요. 이 열차 어디서 타요?
Staff: 6번 승강장으로 가세요.
You: 6번이요?
Staff: 네. 아래로 내려가세요.
You on the platform: 8호차 어디예요?
Staff: 저쪽이에요.
You: 감사합니다.
You confirmed the platform, repeated the number, caught the direction, and found the right car.
Before stepping through the train door, make one final match: destination, train number, and car number. After your trip, notice how the counter 호 works beyond trains in room numbers, subway lines, and numbered units. One station word becomes part of a larger Korean number system.
