Literally: "Did you eat rice?"
Your first instinct might be to describe your lunch in detail. Don't. This isn't a dietary inquiry. It's a greeting — the Korean equivalent of "How are you?" or "How's it going?"
And once you understand why Koreans ask this, you understand something important about how care works in Korean culture.

Korean mothers and grandmothers ask this one constantly. If you answer no, prepare for a concerned look and possibly a lecture about how breakfast is the most important meal.

You're meeting a Korean friend on a Saturday afternoon. They text you: "밥 먹었어?" You text back honestly: "아니, 아직" (Ani, ajik — No, not yet). Within seconds, the plan changes. Instead of the cafe they suggested, they pick a restaurant. "그럼 밥 먼저 먹자" (Geureom bap meonjeo meokja — Then let's eat first). You arrive and they've already ordered — soup, rice, banchan, the works.
