The Korean alphabet looks intimidating for about five minutes. After that, most people realize it's one of the most logically designed writing systems in the world.
King Sejong the Great created Hangul (한글) in 1443 with a specific goal: make it so easy that anyone could learn to read and write. Before Hangul, Koreans used Chinese characters—a system that took years to master and was only accessible to the wealthy and educated. Sejong wanted literacy for everyone.
The result? An alphabet where each consonant is literally shaped like the mouth position used to make that sound. The vowels are based on three symbols representing heaven (dot), earth (horizontal line), and human (vertical line). It's genius.
And you can learn the basics in a single afternoon.

Page 1: The 14 Basic Consonants (자음, jaeum)

Notice a pattern? The aspirated consonants (ㅊ, ㅋ, ㅌ, ㅍ) look like their plain versions (ㅈ, ㄱ, ㄷ, ㅂ) with extra lines. Sejong designed it this way on purpose—related sounds look similar.
And ㅇ? When it's at the beginning of a syllable, it's silent—just a placeholder. But at the end of a syllable (as batchim), it makes the "ng" sound, like in "sing."
Page 2: The 10 Basic Vowels (모음, moeum)

See the pattern? Adding a second branch makes the "y" version:

Vertical vowels (ㅏ, ㅑ, ㅓ, ㅕ, ㅣ) sit to the right of the consonant: 가, 나, 다
Horizontal vowels (ㅗ, ㅛ, ㅜ, ㅠ, ㅡ) sit below the consonant: 고, 노, 도

Empty syllable blocks where you can practice writing each consonant-vowel combination. Start with simple combinations (가, 나, 다) and work up to more complex ones (괜, 찮).
How Syllable Blocks Work
This is the beautiful part. Korean characters aren't written in a line like English letters. They're stacked into blocks, and each block is one syllable.
Every block needs at least:

One consonant (on top or left)
•
One vowel (to the right or below)
Optional:
•
One consonant at the bottom (batchim)
Examples of how blocks are built:

So the word 한글 (Hangul) is two blocks: 한 (h+a+n) and 글 (g+eu+l). Each block is one syllable.
Real moment: A student of mine was intimidated by Korean writing for months. She kept putting off learning Hangul, thinking it would take weeks. I challenged her to learn it in one evening. She sat down with the practice sheet at 7 PM. By 9 PM, she was reading simple Korean words off restaurant menus I pulled up on Google Images. She texted me at 10 PM: "I CAN READ KOREAN." Two hours. That's genuinely all it takes for the basics.
How to Use the Practice Sheet
Step 1: Print it out.
Seriously—physically writing helps memory far more than typing or just looking at characters. Studies show that handwriting activates different brain areas than digital input, and it significantly improves character recognition.
Step 2: Follow the stroke order.
Each character has a specific order for drawing its lines. The practice sheet includes numbered arrows showing stroke order. This matters because:

Koreans can tell when stroke order is off (it looks "foreign")
General rules:

Top to bottom

Horizontal before vertical
Step 3: Say it out loud while you write.
Connect the visual shape to the sound. When you write ㄱ, say "g." When you write 가, say "ga." This triple connection (visual + motor + auditory) locks the character into memory.
Step 4: Test yourself.
Cover the pronunciation column. Can you look at each character and say its sound? Then try the reverse: hear the sound (say it in your head) and write the character. Both directions matter.
Common Questions About Hangul
"Do I need to learn handwriting? I'll just type."
You don't need to, but handwriting helps you recognize characters faster. People who learn to write Hangul by hand can typically read it more quickly than those who only type. Plus, you'll occasionally need to fill out forms or write your name in Korean.
"Some characters look almost the same. How do I tell them apart?"
The trickiest pairs:

ㄱ (g) vs ㅋ (k): ㅋ has an extra horizontal line
•
ㄷ (d) vs ㅌ (t): ㅌ has an extra horizontal line
•
ㅂ (b) vs ㅍ (p): ㅍ looks like π (pi)
•
ㅓ (eo) vs ㅏ (a): Branch goes LEFT (ㅓ) vs RIGHT (ㅏ)
•
ㅗ (o) vs ㅜ (u): Branch goes UP (ㅗ) vs DOWN (ㅜ)
"What about the double consonants and compound vowels?"
Those come after you master the basics. The practice sheet focuses on the 14 consonants and 10 vowels because that's what you need first. Double consonants (ㄲ, ㄸ, ㅃ, ㅆ, ㅉ) and compound vowels (ㅐ, ㅔ, ㅘ, etc.) build on what you learn here.

You won't understand all the meanings yet, but you can read them. And that's a huge step. Once you can read Hangul, you can use dictionaries, read signs in Korea, and follow along with textbooks.
Your First Week With Hangul
Day 1: Learn the 14 consonants. Practice writing each one 10 times.
Day 2: Learn the 10 vowels. Practice writing each one 10 times.
Day 3: Combine consonants + vowels. Write all combinations with ㄱ: 가, 갸, 거, 겨, 고, 교, 구, 규, 그, 기.
Day 4: Do the same with ㄴ, ㄷ, ㄹ.
Day 5: Continue with remaining consonants.
Day 6: Practice reading Korean words (food names are perfect for this—라면, 김치, 비빔밥).
Day 7: Review everything. Try reading Korean signs or menu photos online.
Day 2: Learn the 10 vowels. Practice writing each one 10 times.
Day 3: Combine consonants + vowels. Write all combinations with ㄱ: 가, 갸, 거, 겨, 고, 교, 구, 규, 그, 기.
