If you live in a Korean apartment or stay in an officetel, one of your first real-life Korean moments may come through a speaker.
The intercom rings. A delivery driver speaks quickly. You cannot see the person's face, and the Korean feels faster than usual.
The good news is that apartment delivery communication is usually short. You only need to recognize a few repeated words and choose one simple reply.
Why it feels fast
Korean apartment life is very delivery-friendly. Packages, food, groceries, and other items often come directly to the building.
Drivers and security staff handle many deliveries every day, so they usually speak briefly. They may only need permission to enter the building, confirmation of your unit, or instructions for where to leave the item.
This is not a long conversation. It is more like a quick signal: package, entrance, door, downstairs, thank you.
Words you may hear
택배입니다 — taekbae-imnida — It's a package delivery.
배달입니다 — baedal-imnida — It's a food delivery.
문 열어 주세요 — mun yeoreo juseyo — Please open the door.
공동현관 열어 주세요 — gongdong hyeongwan yeoreo juseyo — Please open the shared entrance.
몇 동 몇 호세요? — myeot dong myeot hoseyo? — Which building and unit are you?
문 앞에 둘게요 — mun ape dulgeyo — I'll leave it in front of the door.
Listen especially for 택배, 배달, 문, 공동현관, 동, and 호. Those words tell you most of what is happening.
Useful replies
네 — ne — Yes / okay
문 앞에 놔 주세요 — mun ape nwa juseyo — Please leave it in front of the door.
지금 내려갈게요 — jigeum naeryeogalgeyo — I'll come down now.
잠시만요 — jamsimanyo — One moment, please.
감사합니다 — gamsahamnida — Thank you.
These replies are short, but they work in many apartment delivery situations.
When they ask you to open the entrance
Many Korean apartment buildings have a shared entrance door before the elevator area. Delivery drivers may call through the intercom and ask you to open it.
If you hear 공동현관 or 문 열어 주세요, they probably need access to the building entrance. You may press the open button on the intercom, depending on the building system.
If you are not sure what they said, say 잠시만요 and check the screen or ask someone nearby.
Leave it at the door
문 앞에 놔 주세요 is one of the most useful apartment phrases in Korea. It is common for packages and food delivery.
You can say:
네, 문 앞에 놔 주세요. 감사합니다.
Yes, please leave it in front of the door. Thank you.
For food delivery, many apps already let you choose "leave at the door," but the driver may still call if the entrance is locked or the address is unclear.
When you need to go down
Sometimes the driver cannot come up because the shared entrance is locked, the elevator needs a card, parking is difficult, or the item is large.
Say:
지금 내려갈게요 — I'll come down now.
This sounds natural and polite. It also tells the other person they do not need to keep explaining.
Your apartment script
Hear 택배 or 배달.
Answer 네.
If they need the entrance, open the 공동현관.
If you want it left outside, say 문 앞에 놔 주세요.
If you need to meet them, say 지금 내려갈게요.
End with 감사합니다.
The call may sound fast, but the script is usually very short. Once you catch the delivery words, you can respond without understanding every syllable.
