If you stay in a Korean apartment, officetel, guesthouse, or residential rental, keep impact noise low and follow the quiet hours written in the building or host instructions. Watch for 층간소음 (noise between floors), 소음 주의 (please be careful about noise), and 뛰지 마세요 (please do not run). If someone raises a concern, a useful first response is 죄송합니다. 조심할게요 ("I'm sorry. I'll be careful").
Korean you may see or hear
Natural meaning
층간소음
noise traveling between floors
소음에 주의해 주세요
Please be mindful of noise.
밤에는 조용히 해 주세요
Please be quiet at night.
실내에서 뛰지 마세요
Please do not run indoors.
문을 세게 닫지 마세요
Please do not slam the door.
조용히 해 주세요
Please keep it quiet.
There is no single quiet-hour schedule for every building. Use the time stated in your reservation, room guide, elevator notice, or message from the host.

Recognize the main word: 층간소음

층간소음 combines 층간 ("between floors") and 소음 ("noise"). It often refers to impact or repeated sound that travels through a residential building: footsteps, running, jumping, moving furniture, exercise, a slamming door, or a loud appliance.
Travelers may see the word in:
•
an elevator notice
•
a message from a host
•
a sign in a hallway
•
short-term rental rules
•
a note near a gym or shared room
You do not need to assume that every ordinary sound is forbidden. The practical concern is avoidable sound that is loud, repeated, or happening during the building's quieter hours.

Read common apartment notices

Apartment notices often use a noun plus 주의, meaning "caution" or "please pay attention."
Korean notice
Meaning
층간소음 주의
Be mindful of noise between floors.
야간 소음 주의
Be mindful of nighttime noise.
입주민을 배려해 주세요
Please be considerate of residents.
늦은 시간 세탁기 사용 자제
Please avoid using the washing machine late.
가구를 끌지 마세요
Do not drag furniture.
복도에서는 조용히
Please be quiet in the hallway.
공동생활 수칙
Rules for shared living.
자제 means restraint or avoiding an action. A notice ending in 사용 자제 is a request not to use something in that situation, even though it does not use 금지 ("prohibited").
배려해 주세요 means "please be considerate." It may appear in polite notices about noise, parking, recycling, elevators, and other shared facilities.

Sounds worth checking before they become a problem

In a residential stay, look at your host's rules before:
•
rolling a suitcase through the hallway late at night
•
using a washing machine or vacuum
•
doing jumping exercises
•
playing music through a speaker
•
having several people talk in a small unit
•
moving chairs or tables
•
letting children run indoors
•
repeatedly opening and closing a heavy door
Soft slippers, lifting rather than dragging a chair, and closing the door by hand can reduce impact noise. These are practical choices, not a claim that all homes follow identical habits.
If the rule is unclear, ask:
Korean
Natural meaning
몇 시부터 조용히 해야 해요?
From what time should we be quiet?
지금 세탁기 써도 돼요?
Can I use the washing machine now?
여기서 음악 틀어도 돼요?
Can I play music here?
밤에는 샤워해도 괜찮아요?
Is it okay to shower at night?
짐을 어디에서 정리하면 돼요?
Where should I organize my luggage?
Use -아/어도 돼요? to ask permission. 써도 돼요? means "May I use it?" and 틀어도 돼요? means "May I turn it on/play it?"

If a host or neighbor asks you to lower the noise

You may hear:
Korean
Meaning
조금만 조용히 해 주세요.
Please keep it down a little.
아래층에서 연락이 왔어요.
The downstairs unit contacted us.
발소리가 너무 크게 들려요.
The footsteps sound very loud.
밤에는 세탁기를 사용하시면 안 돼요.
You cannot use the washing machine at night.
복도에서 대화는 삼가 주세요.
Please refrain from talking in the hallway.
Listen for the problem word: 발소리 (footstep noise), 세탁기 (washing machine), 음악 (music), 복도 (hallway), or 문 (door). Even if you miss the full grammar, that noun tells you what to change.
A short, calm reply is enough:
죄송합니다. 바로 조용히 할게요.
I'm sorry. I'll quiet down right away.
알려 주셔서 감사합니다. 조심할게요.
Thank you for letting me know. I'll be careful.
저희가 그런 줄 몰랐어요. 지금부터 조심하겠습니다.
We didn't realize. We'll be careful from now on.
-ㄹ게요 expresses what you will do in response: 조심할게요 ("I'll be careful") and 확인할게요 ("I'll check"). -겠습니다 sounds more formal and may suit a message to building staff or a host.

If you are the person hearing repeated noise

For a short-term stay, contact the host, front desk, or building manager instead of immediately confronting an unknown resident. Describe the sound, location, and time without guessing who caused it.
Korean
Meaning
위층에서 소리가 계속 나요.
Noise keeps coming from upstairs.
옆방 음악 소리가 너무 커요.
The music from the next room is too loud.
복도에서 큰 소리가 들려요.
I hear a loud noise in the hallway.
밤마다 발소리가 들려요.
I hear footsteps every night.
확인해 주실 수 있어요?
Could you check?
A complete message:
안녕하세요. 지금 위층에서 쿵쿵거리는 소리가 계속 들려요. 확인해 주실 수 있을까요?
Hello. I keep hearing thumping from upstairs right now. Could you check?
계속 means "continuously/keeps," and 쿵쿵 imitates repeated thumping. Use them only when that accurately describes what you hear.
If the noise is a one-time sound, wait briefly before reporting it. If it repeats, note when it happens so the host has specific information.

Hallways, elevators, and shared entrances

Noise rules extend beyond the room. Residential hallways can echo, and a conversation outside one door may be audible inside several units.
At night:
•
finish group conversations before entering the residential hallway
•
carry a suitcase over a raised doorway edge instead of repeatedly striking it
•
avoid speakerphone near front doors
•
stop an automatic door from slamming
•
keep elevator conversation low if a notice requests it
You may see 문이 닫힙니다 ("The door is closing") in an elevator, but that is an announcement, not a request about noise. A behavioral notice will usually contain 조용히, 주의, 자제, 금지, or 마세요.

A realistic host message

안녕하세요. 밤 10시 이후에는 소음에 주의해 주세요. 실내에서 뛰거나 큰 소리로 음악을 듣지 마세요. 복도에서도 조용히 부탁드립니다.
This means:
Hello. Please be mindful of noise after 10 p.m. Do not run indoors or listen to music loudly. Please also keep quiet in the hallway.
Do not treat "10 p.m." as a national rule; it is the example building's stated time. The transferable Korean is 이후 ("after"), 소음에 주의해 주세요 ("please be mindful of noise"), and 부탁드립니다 ("we ask/please").

The travel rule to remember

Read the accommodation's stated hours, reduce repeated impact noise, and respond calmly if someone contacts you. The three lines that solve most situations are:
몇 시부터 조용히 해야 해요?
From what time should we be quiet?
죄송합니다. 조심할게요.
I'm sorry. I'll be careful.
소리가 계속 나요. 확인해 주실 수 있어요?
The noise keeps happening. Could you check?
That is more useful than memorizing a vague rule about every resident. You can read the local instruction, explain the immediate situation, and take the next action.
