Korea has many apartment complexes, officetels, and high-rise buildings. That means a lot of daily life happens in elevators. You may use one to go home, visit a friend, reach a clinic, go to a study room, or find a small office on the tenth floor.
The elevator ride is short, but it can show a lot about Korean manners. People usually do not make big conversation. They move quickly, keep space when they can, and pay attention to small things like holding the door or letting older people step out first.
If you learn a few patterns, elevators in Korea become much less awkward.

You will see floor buttons, open and close buttons, and sometimes separate elevators for residents, visitors, moving, or deliveries.
Quiet Is Normal
In many Korean elevators, silence is the default. Neighbors may nod slightly, say a soft hello, or say nothing. That does not mean people are unfriendly. It simply means the elevator is treated as a small shared space where people do not want to bother each other.
If you are used to casual elevator chat, this can feel cold at first. But in Korea, quiet can be polite.
A simple 안녕하세요 is fine when you meet a neighbor, security guard, or someone you recognize. With total strangers, silence is also fine.
Real moment: The tiny nod
You enter your friend's apartment elevator. An older woman is already inside. Your friend gives a small nod and says 안녕하세요 in a calm voice. The woman nods back. Nobody says anything else.
That is not an awkward failed conversation. That is a complete polite moment. The greeting was small, the mood stayed comfortable, and everyone continued their day.
Holding the Door
Koreans often hold the elevator door when someone is close, especially if the person is carrying bags, pushing a stroller, or walking slowly. You can press the open button and say nothing, or say 타세요 (taseyo), which means "Please get in."

If someone holds the door for you, 감사합니다 is enough. You do not need a long thank-you.
Asking Which Floor
If you are standing near the buttons and someone enters, you may hear 몇 층이세요? It means "Which floor?" The person is offering to press the button for you.
You can answer with the floor number:

오 층이요. (o cheung-iyo.) Fifth floor.
•
십이 층이요. (sibi cheung-iyo.) Twelfth floor.
•
일 층이요. (il cheung-iyo.) First floor.
The ending -이요 makes the short answer sound polite enough for this situation.
Letting People Out First
This is a basic rule in many countries, and it matters in Korea too: let people exit before you enter. In busy subway stations or apartment buildings, people may move quickly, but the polite order is still clear.
If you are blocking the door and someone behind you needs to leave, step out briefly or shift to the side. Even if it is not your floor, stepping out for one second and re-entering is normal.
Real moment: The delivery driver with two hands full
A delivery driver enters with bags in both hands. He cannot easily press the button. Someone near the panel asks, 몇 층이세요? He answers, 십오 층이요. The person presses 15. No one makes a big deal about it.
That small help is common in Korean buildings. You may not have a conversation, but people still notice practical needs.
Apartment Security and Visitor Floors
Some Korean apartment elevators require a card key. Visitors may not be able to choose a floor unless the resident registers them or opens access. In officetels, some floors may be restricted after hours.
If the button does not work, do not panic. It may be a security setting, not a broken elevator. You can call the person you are visiting and say:

Korean apartment complexes often have multiple buildings called 동 (dong). Building 101 and building 102 may be separate towers inside the same complex.
Close Button Culture
You may notice people pressing the close button quickly. Korean city life can feel fast, and elevators are no exception. Pressing the close button is common, but be careful not to close the door on someone who is clearly approaching.
If someone is far away, people may close the door. If someone is right there, holding it is kinder.
Moving, Deliveries, and Big Items
Large apartment buildings may have rules for moving furniture, delivery carts, or renovation work. Sometimes there is a padded elevator reserved for moving. Sometimes residents reserve elevator time for moving day.
As a visitor, you probably do not need to manage this. But if you live in Korea, it helps to ask the management office before moving large items.

One common mistake is standing directly in front of the door while waiting. In Korea, people often stand slightly to the side so passengers can get out first. It is a small habit, but it makes the flow smoother in busy apartment buildings.
Another mistake is talking loudly on the phone in a packed elevator. A quick call is not shocking, but a loud conversation can feel uncomfortable because everyone is trapped in the same small space. If possible, keep your voice low or wait until you get out.

Crowded elevators are common during commute hours, delivery times, and weekends. If you are near the door but not getting out, shift to the side when the elevator stops. If you need to get out from the back, a short 잠시만요 helps people understand that you are coming through.
