Korean apartment elevators are full of tiny words. Most are simple, but when you are new to Korea, even a button can make you pause.
This guide helps you recognize the words that matter: opening, closing, basement floors, emergency calls, and inspection signs.
The buttons you will use first
The two most useful words are 열림 and 닫힘. They are often on the door-open and door-close buttons. In older buildings or small elevators, the icons may be small, so the Korean words help.

Basement floors can be confusing
Many apartment buildings have parking on basement floors. B1 may appear as 지하 1층, and B2 as 지하 2층. If someone says "지하로 내려오세요," they mean "Please come down to the basement level."
When the elevator is under inspection
점검중 means the elevator is being checked. 운행중지 means it is not operating. These signs are often temporary, but they can matter if you are expecting a delivery, moving luggage, or meeting someone downstairs.
