What Is Daiso, Exactly?
Daiso is a chain of value stores found on practically every major street in Korea. Originally Japanese (the name comes from the Japanese parent company), Korean Daiso has evolved into its own thing — bigger stores, better quality, and products specifically designed for Korean lifestyles.
Most items cost between ₩1,000 and ₩5,000 (roughly $0.75 to $3.75). The sweet spot is ₩1,000–₩3,000, which means you can fill a basket without any financial guilt.
There are over 1,500 Daiso locations across Korea. Some are small corner shops. Others are multi-floor megastores. Either way, you'll find one within walking distance of wherever you are.

The Shopping Experience
Finding something:
"이거 어디 있어요?" (Igeo eodi isseoyo?) — "Where is this?"

Why Daiso Is Cultural
Daiso isn't just a store — it reflects something about Korean life. The obsession with organization, the value placed on making small spaces functional, the delight in finding cute, cheap things that brighten up a desk or a kitchen counter.

If you're from the US, think Dollar Tree but with significantly better design and quality. If you're from Japan, it's the Daiso you know but adapted to Korean tastes and living spaces. If you're from Europe, imagine a Flying Tiger but cheaper and more practical.
The Korean locations tend to be larger, cleaner, and more organized than their international counterparts. Product packaging is often bilingual (Korean and English or Japanese), and the seasonal inventory rotates constantly.

If You're Visiting Korea
Put Daiso on your list. Not as a tourist attraction — just as a place to wander through and experience a slice of everyday Korean life. The stationery section alone is worth the visit. And if you need practical travel supplies (adapters, toiletry containers, laundry bags), Daiso will have them for a fraction of what you'd pay elsewhere.
Set a budget. Bring cash. Accept that you'll overshoot the budget by at least ₩3,000.
Then tell your friends: "다이소에서 개싸게 샀어!" (Daisoeseo gaessage sasseo!) — "I got it super cheap at Daiso!" — and watch every Korean in the room nod knowingly.

Scenario 1: Setting up your Korean apartment. You've just moved into a 원룸 (won-rum, studio apartment) in Seoul. The place is bare — no hangers, no dish rack, no trash bins. Your Korean friend says two words: "다이소 가자" (Daiso gaja — "Let's go to Daiso"). You spend an hour filling a basket: a drying rack (₩3,000), drawer organizers (₩1,000 each), hooks for the bathroom (₩1,000), a laundry bag (₩2,000), and a set of storage containers for the kitchen (₩2,000). Total: ₩15,000 — about $11. Your apartment goes from empty to livable in a single Daiso trip. Daiso has become a genuine cultural reference point in Korea. It shows up in everyday conversation:
"그거 다이소 거 아니야?" (Geugeo Daiso geo aniya?) — "Isn't that from Daiso?"
There's no shame in the answer being yes. In fact, finding a great product at Daiso is considered a minor life win. Korean YouTube and blog culture is full of "다이소 추천템" (Daiso chucheontem — "Daiso recommended items") content, where people review the best finds from recent visits. Some of these videos get millions of views.
The store also reflects Korea's "가성비" (gaseongbi) culture — a term that means "price-to-performance ratio." Koreans are masterful at finding high value at low cost, and Daiso is the physical embodiment of that mindset.
