# Korean Kiosk Cheat Sheet: 20 Words and Messages on Food Screens

You are standing at a food kiosk in Korea. The menu is in Korean, and someone has joined the line behind you.

Do not try to read every button. Many food kiosks move through the same five decisions: eat here or take out, choose food, select required options, check the order, and pay. The layout varies by restaurant, but the 20 words below tell you what the screen wants from you.

## Screen 1: Eat here or take out

The first screen may show two large buttons. Look for one label from each side.

| Korean | Pronunciation | Meaning |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 매장 | mae-jang | eat here |
| 먹고 가기 | meok-go ga-gi | eat here |
| 포장 | po-jang | take out |
| 가지고 가기 | ga-ji-go ga-gi | to go |

**매장** and **먹고 가기** do the same job on this screen. **포장** and **가지고 가기** are the takeout choices.

## Screen 2: Choose your food

Menu categories often run across the top or down one side.

| Korean | Pronunciation | Meaning |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 추천 | chu-cheon | recommended |
| 세트 | se-teu | combo |
| 단품 | dan-pum | single item |
| 음료 | eum-nyo | drinks |
| 사이드 | sa-i-deu | sides |

The useful pair is **세트** and **단품**. Choose **세트** for the combo. Choose **단품** when you want only the item shown.

## Screen 3: Complete the required options

A pop-up may ask about size, sauce, side dishes, or a drink.

| 필수 | pil-su | required |
| 추가 | chu-ga | add / extra |
| 변경 | byeon-gyeong | change |

If the next button is still gray, look for an option marked **필수**. The kiosk will not continue until you choose it. **추가** means you are adding something; check the price beside the option before tapping.

## Screen 4: Check the order

| Korean | Pronunciation | Meaning |

| 주문하기 | ju-mun-ha-gi | place order |
| 결제하기 | gyeol-je-ha-gi | pay |
| 취소 | chwi-so | cancel |
| 처음으로 | cheo-eu-meu-ro | back to the start |

**처음으로** is the reset button. Use it when you reach the wrong screen and want to begin again.

## Screen 5: Pay and find your order

| Korean | Pronunciation | Meaning |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 카드를 꽂아 주세요 | ka-deu-reul kko-ja ju-se-yo | please insert your card |
| 결제 완료 | gyeol-je wal-lyo | payment complete |
| 포인트 적립 | po-in-teu jeong-nip | collect membership points |
| 주문번호 | ju-mun beon-ho | order number |

When the reader asks you to insert the card, leave it in until the terminal tells you the payment is complete or asks you to remove it. If **포인트 적립**appears and you do not use that restaurant's membership program, choose the no or skip option shown on that machine.

Keep the receipt or photograph the

**주문번호**. A pickup screen may display that number, while another restaurant may call it aloud or give you a pager.

If you remember only three words, make them

**포장** for takeout, **필수** for a choice you cannot skip, and **처음으로**when you need to reset the order.

Save this page before your first kiosk meal. You do not need the whole screen. You only need the word that controls the next tap.
