Why Particles Matter

In English, word order tells you who does what:

"The dog chased the cat." (dog = chaser, cat = chased)

•

"The cat chased the dog." (cat = chaser, dog = chased)

In Korean, particles do that job instead. Word order is flexible, so the particle attached to each noun is what tells you its role in the sentence.

•

개가 고양이를 쫓았어요. (The dog chased the cat.)

•

고양이를 개가 쫓았어요. (The dog chased the cat.) ← Same meaning, different order!

Without particles, Korean sentences would be a guessing game. With them, every noun's role is crystal clear.

Particle 1: 은/는 — The Topic Marker

Use 은 after a consonant, 는 after a vowel.

은/는 marks the topic of your sentence—what you're talking about. Think of it as shining a spotlight: "Hey everyone, I'm talking about THIS."

This is 은/는's superpower. It implies "this one, as opposed to that one."

커피는 좋아해요. 차는 별로예요. (Coffee, I like. Tea, not so much.)

•

어제는 비가 왔어요. 오늘은 맑아요. (Yesterday it rained. Today it's clear.)

3. Making general statements:

건강은 중요해요. (Health is important.)

•

시간은 금이에요. (Time is gold.)

Real moment: At a Korean BBQ dinner, your friend asks what everyone wants to order. One person says "저는 삼겹살이요" (as for me, samgyeopsal). Another says "저는 갈비요" (as for me, galbi). That 는 naturally creates a contrast between each person's choice. It's elegant, and it's exactly how Koreans actually talk in this situation.

Particle 2: 이/가 — The Subject Marker

Use 이 after a consonant, 가 after a vowel.

이/가 marks the subject—who or what is doing the action or being described. It's especially used for new information, answers to questions, and observations.

1. Answering "who" or "what" questions:

When something appears for the first time—a fresh observation.

은/는 vs 이/가: The Real Difference

This is the question that haunts every Korean learner. Here's the clearest way I can explain it:

은/는 says: "Speaking of X..." (sets the frame, may imply contrast)
이/가 says: "X is the one that..." (identifies the specific subject)

Particle 3: 을/를 — The Object Marker

을/를 marks the object—what receives the action. If someone eats something, the something gets 을/를.

Real moment: When I teach particles, I use a restaurant metaphor. The topic marker (은/는) is like saying "at THIS restaurant..." The subject marker (이/가) is like saying "THIS dish is the one that..." The object marker (을/를) is "I'll have THIS." Each one has a clear job, and they often appear in the same sentence without confusion.

When Koreans Drop Particles

Here's a secret that textbooks won't tell you: in casual spoken Korean, particles get dropped constantly.

"나 학생이야" instead of "나는 학생이야" (I'm a student.)

In relaxed speech, if the meaning is clear from context, particles are optional. But in these situations, you should use them:
