The front desk clerk hands your passport back with both hands. You take it with one. Nothing bad happens, but you notice the small mismatch and wonder if you did something wrong.
You didn't. This isn't a strict rule with one right answer. It's a habit that shows up more with certain people and certain objects, and travelers only need to recognize the pattern, not perform it perfectly.
The short version
Use two hands, or your right hand with your left hand lightly supporting your wrist, when someone older or in a service role is handing you something formal: a passport, a room key, a business card, a receipt at a nicer restaurant, or a gift. With a friend your age passing you a coffee, one hand is normal.

If you only remember one move, support your right wrist with your left hand while you receive something. It reads as careful, and it still works when one of your hands is holding a bag or your phone.
Where you'll actually see it
Front desks, banks, and immigration counters are where the general rule applies most clearly, since you're a stranger being handed something formal by someone doing their job. If a hotel receptionist or an immigration officer uses both hands or the wrist-support version when they hand back your passport or key card, that's ordinary etiquette in practice, not a special favor. Plenty of staff will hand things over with one hand too, especially when they're moving fast, and that isn't rude either.
Restaurant staff vary more, and formality matters more there than the job itself. A casual spot handing you a paper receipt over the counter usually won't bother with two hands. A server at a nicer sit-down restaurant returning your card after payment is more likely to use two hands or the wrist-support version, especially if the restaurant leans formal.
Business cards work the same way
If your trip includes a work meeting, a language exchange, or an introduction through a homestay, you may end up trading business cards. Offer and receive the card with both hands, then take a moment to actually look at it before putting it away. Sliding it straight into a back pocket without a glance can come across as dismissive to people who notice, even if nobody says anything.

For a gift to a host, a bottle of wine, snacks from your country, something small for a homestay family, use two hands or the wrist-support version. It's a small moment, but it's one where the gesture matters more than most, especially with someone clearly older than you.
Paying for something small at a convenience store or street stall doesn't call for the same care. One hand is normal there, and nobody reads it as careless.
The exceptions that trip people up
Close friends and people your own age drop the formality fast. If a Korean friend hands you a drink at a bar with one hand, that's not them forgetting manners. It's them treating you like a friend instead of a stranger they need to impress. Matching their casualness back is fine.
Money is its own small exception. At small shops and markets, cash and change move with whatever hand is free. Nobody counts hands during a quick transaction at a street stall.
Age can matter as much as the object itself. If an elderly stranger stops you for directions and hands you their phone to type an address into, using two hands fits the moment even though nothing else about the situation is formal.
A simple rule for the trip
None of this needs advance planning, and it's not a test you can fail quietly. Watch what the other person does first. If they use two hands or support their wrist, mirror it on your next exchange with them. If they're relaxed and one-handed, stay relaxed too.
