You check your phone before heading out, but the forecast app is all in Korean. A local at your guesthouse asks 오늘 날씨 어때요? and you're not sure if you should grab an umbrella or sunglasses.

## Asking about the weather

| Korean | Pronunciation | Meaning |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 날씨 | nal-ssi | weather |
| 오늘 날씨 어때요? | o-neul nal-ssi eo-ttae-yo | How's the weather today? |

## What's happening in the sky

| Korean | Pronunciation | Meaning |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 맑아요 | mal-ga-yo | It's clear / sunny |
| 흐려요 | heu-ryeo-yo | It's cloudy |
| 비가 와요 | bi-ga wa-yo | It's raining |
| 눈이 와요 | nu-ni wa-yo | It's snowing |
| 바람이 불어요 | ba-ra-mi bu-reo-yo | It's windy |

## How it feels

| Korean | Pronunciation | Meaning |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 더워요 | deo-wo-yo | It's hot |
| 추워요 | chu-wo-yo | It's cold |
| 따뜻해요 | tta-tteu-tae-yo | It's warm |
| 시원해요 | si-won-hae-yo | It's cool |
| 습해요 | seu-pae-yo | It's humid |

Korean weather words are almost all descriptive verbs, which means they conjugate on their own without needing a separate "is" or "it's": 더워요 by itself already means "it's hot." Precipitation works differently, pairing a noun with 오다 (to come): 비가 와요, rain is coming, or in plainer English, it's raining.

## Two words you'll hear constantly in Korea specifically

| Korean | Pronunciation | Meaning |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 장마 | jang-ma | the summer monsoon season |
| 미세먼지 | mi-se-meon-ji | fine dust |

장마 hits in the middle of summer and means weeks of heavy, repeated rain rather than a passing shower, so it's worth checking the forecast before planning outdoor days in June or July. 미세먼지 shows up on weather apps as its own separate reading alongside temperature, especially in spring, and locals check it the same way you'd check a UV index back home.

Next time the forecast pops up in Korean, you'll know whether to reach for an umbrella or sunglasses.
