좋아요 is written with ㅎ but pronounced [조아요]. When final ㅎ comes before a vowel-initial ending, the ㅎ is not pronounced. The same ㅎ can combine with a following consonant in another form: 좋다 is pronounced [조타], and 좋고 is pronounced [조코].
Written form
Standard sound
Meaning
좋아요
[조아요]
It is good; I like it.
좋다
[조타]
to be good
좋고
[조코]
is good and…
좋은
[조은]
good + noun
This is not simply "soft ㅎ in fast speech." Korean ㅎ follows predictable rules. Recognizing them helps you hear recommendations, directions, permission, and descriptions during your trip.
The correct written form never changes, even when the spoken result contains no separate h sound.

1. Final ㅎ disappears before a vowel

When a verb or adjective stem ends in ㅎ and a vowel-initial ending follows, the ㅎ is not pronounced:
좋 + 아요 → 좋아요 [조아요]
놓 + 아요 → 놓아요 [노아요]
With the double final consonants ㄶ and ㅀ, the ㅎ disappears while the other consonant remains and may link forward.
Written Korean
Standard sound
Meaning
많아요
[마나요]
There are many; it is a lot.
괜찮아요
[괜차나요]
It is okay; no, thank you, by context.
싫어요
[시러요]
I do not like it.
넣어요
[너어요]
put in
These are standard forms, not optional fast-speech spellings. Always write the ㅎ that belongs in the word.

Hear 좋아요 in recommendations

At a café, hotel, market, or information desk, 좋아요 can mean "It is good," "That works," or "I like it," depending on context.
여기 좋아요?
Is this place good?
네, 위치가 좋아요.
Yes, the location is good.
이 시간 괜찮아요?
Is this time okay?
네, 좋아요.
Yes, that works.
Listen for [조아요], not a separate "jo-ha-yo." When 좋은 comes before a noun, listen for [조은]:
Korean
Meaning
좋은 식당
a good restaurant
좋은 자리
a good seat
교통이 좋은 곳
a place with convenient transportation
사진 찍기 좋은 곳
a good place for taking photos

Hear 많아요 and 괜찮아요

많아요 [마나요] is useful when checking crowds, quantities, choices, or waiting times.
지금 사람이 많아요?
Are there many people now?
주말에는 사람이 많아요.
There are many people on weekends.
짐이 많아요.
I have a lot of luggage.
괜찮아요 [괜차나요] changes meaning with the situation and tone:
Situation
괜찮아요 can mean
Staff check after a problem
I am okay; it is okay.
Offer of a bag or receipt
No, thank you.
Asking whether a time works
That time is fine.
Checking food or a seat
It is fine; no problem.
If the answer could be ambiguous, add the action:
봉투는 괜찮아요.
I do not need a bag.
네, 그 시간 괜찮아요.
Yes, that time works.
아니요, 너무 매워서 안 괜찮아요.
No, it is too spicy, so it is not okay.

2. ㅎ makes ㄱ, ㄷ, or ㅈ aspirated

When ㅎ, ㄶ, or ㅀ meets a following ㄱ, ㄷ, or ㅈ, the consonants combine into an aspirated sound: ㅋ, ㅌ, or ㅊ.
Written Korean
Standard sound
Change
놓고
[노코]
ㅎ + ㄱ → ㅋ
좋다
[조타]
ㅎ + ㄷ → ㅌ
좋지
[조치]
ㅎ + ㅈ → ㅊ
많고
[만코]
ㄶ + ㄱ → ㄴ + ㅋ
괜찮다
[괜찬타]
ㄶ + ㄷ → ㄴ + ㅌ
The breath from ㅎ moves into the next consonant. Do not try to pronounce a separate final h and then the following consonant.

Put or leave something: 놓아요 and 놓고

The same verb produces two different listening patterns:
Form
Sound
Use
놓아요
[노아요]
put/place it
놓고
[노코]
put it and…; leave it and…
놓다
[노타]
to put; to place
You may hear:
가방은 여기 놓아 주세요.
Please put your bag here.
문 앞에 놓고 가 주세요.
Please leave it in front of the door.
짐을 어디에 놓으면 돼요?
Where should I put my luggage?
Listen to the next ending before deciding whether the ㅎ disappears or strengthens another consonant.

3. A consonant before ㅎ can also become aspirated

The interaction can happen in the other direction. A final ㄱ, ㄷ, ㅂ, or ㅈ before ㅎ may combine with it to produce ㅋ, ㅌ, ㅍ, or ㅊ.
Written Korean
Standard sound
Travel meaning
못해요
[모태요]
cannot do; am not good at
어떻게
[어떠케]
how
입학
[이팍]
admission to a school
축하해요
starts [추카-]
Congratulations.
Two especially useful phrases are:
한국어를 잘 못해요.
I do not speak Korean well.
여기서 어떻게 가요?
How do I get there from here?
You will also use 어떻게 for machines and payments:
이거 어떻게 사용해요?
How do I use this?
어떻게 결제해요?
How do I pay?

When ㅎ stays clear

Do not delete every ㅎ. At the beginning of a syllable in words such as these, it normally remains audible:
Korean
Meaning
호텔
hotel
하나
one
한국
Korea
현금
cash
화장실
restroom
환승
transfer
Useful phrases:
현금만 돼요?
Is it cash only?
화장실이 어디예요?
Where is the restroom?
어디에서 환승해요?
Where do I transfer?
The right rule depends on what touches ㅎ, not on whether the speaker happens to be talking quickly.

A realistic restaurant conversation

여행자: 이 식당 좋아요?
직원: 네, 음식도 좋고 메뉴도 많아요.
여행자: 지금 사람이 많아요?
직원: 조금 많지만 기다려도 괜찮아요.
The conversation contains 좋아요 [조아요], 좋고 [조코], 많아요 [마나요], and 괜찮아요 [괜차나요]. One spelling family creates several sounds because different endings follow it.
At a hotel:
직원: 짐은 여기 놓고 가셔도 돼요.
여행자: 네. 나중에 어떻게 찾으면 돼요?
직원: 이 번호표를 보여 주세요.

The sound-to-action link

When ㅎ seems missing or appears inside a stronger consonant, check the next sound:
1.
Before a vowel, final ㅎ may disappear: 좋아요 [조아요].
2.
Before ㄱ, ㄷ, or ㅈ, it may create ㅋ, ㅌ, or ㅊ: 놓고 [노코].
3.
After another final consonant, it may aspirate that consonant: 못해요 [모태요].
4.
At the start of words such as 호텔 and 현금, pronounce it clearly.
This lets you connect the sound to a recommendation, crowd report, placement request, direction question, or payment instruction.
