What to Know About Public Toilets in Korea
You are walking through a subway station in Seoul, carrying coffee in one hand and your phone in the other. Suddenly you need a restroom, but the signs are in Korean and you are not sure if you should expect a password, a bidet, a squat toilet, or toilet paper outside the stall.
Public toilets in Korea are usually easier to use than many visitors expect. Subway stations, large parks, department stores, malls, and highway rest areas often have clean restrooms. The confusing part is not always finding one. It is knowing the small signs and habits that make the experience smoother.
Where you are most likely to find one
In big cities, subway stations are often the safest first guess. Many stations have restrooms inside or near the ticket gate area, though the exact location depends on the station layout. Malls, department stores, museums, libraries, and larger cafés are also common options.
Small restaurants and tiny cafés may have a shared restroom in the hallway, sometimes with a keypad or a key from the counter. If the restroom belongs to a building instead of the shop itself, the staff may point you outside the store rather than toward the back.
Words on the door and signs
These are the words that help first, especially when you are moving quickly.

You may also see 장애인 화장실, which means accessible restroom. In large public buildings, baby-changing spaces or family restrooms may be marked separately.
The toilet paper detail that surprises visitors
In many newer restrooms, toilet paper is inside each stall. In some older public restrooms, you may need to take toilet paper from a dispenser near the entrance or sink area before going into the stall.
This is not a rule everywhere, but it is worth checking before you close the stall door. A quick glance near the entrance can save you an awkward moment.
If you see a sign asking people not to flush toilet paper, follow the sign. Most newer buildings expect paper to be flushed, but older plumbing or certain facilities may still ask people to use the bin. When there is no sign, the usual habit in modern public restrooms is to flush toilet paper and use the bin for sanitary products or trash.
Bidets, squat toilets, and small surprises
In department stores, hotels, airports, and newer buildings, you may see electronic bidet seats with buttons in Korean. If you do not want to use them, you can ignore the panel and use the toilet normally.
In older parks, markets, or transportation stops, you may still find a squat toilet. Many places now have at least one Western-style toilet, but not always every stall. If you prefer a seated toilet, check a few stall doors before choosing.
Another small detail: some public restrooms have strong cleaning schedules. A restroom may be temporarily blocked for cleaning, especially in subway stations, malls, and highway rest areas. If a cleaner is working, waiting a few minutes or using another nearby restroom is normal.
Polite phrases if you need help
You do not need a long sentence. These short phrases are enough in most situations.

If you are asking staff in a shop, 화장실 어디예요? is natural and common. If you want to sound a little softer, add 저기요 at the beginning: 저기요, 화장실 어디예요?
Small etiquette that helps
Korean public restrooms are shared by many people, so the basic expectation is simple: use the space quickly, keep the stall clean, and follow posted signs.
If there is a line, people usually wait in front of the restroom area or by the stalls depending on the layout. In busy women's restrooms, one line for all stalls is common in airports, malls, and event spaces.
If a stall has a red or occupied mark, wait. If a door looks closed but you are not sure, a gentle knock is normal. Someone inside may answer 네, which simply means "yes" and signals that the stall is occupied.
Your restroom safety set
Remember three things: look for 화장실, check whether toilet paper is inside the stall, and follow any sign about flushing. Those small checks solve most restroom confusion in Korea.
And if you only remember one sentence, make it 화장실 어디예요? It is short, polite, and useful almost anywhere, from a subway station to a small café.
