Let's be honest: the hardest part of TOPIK reading isn't the Korean. It's the clock.
TOPIK I gives you 40 questions in 60 minutes. TOPIK II gives you 50 questions in 70 minutes. That's roughly a minute and a half per question—and when you factor in longer passages toward the end, it gets tight.
Most people who score poorly on TOPIK reading don't fail because they can't read Korean. They fail because they run out of time and have to randomly guess the last 10 questions.
The good news? With the right strategy, you can not only finish—you can finish with time to spare.
Know Your Enemy: Question Types
TOPIK reading follows very predictable patterns. Once you recognize the question type, you know exactly how to approach it. Here are the main ones:

Real moment: A student of mine was spending 3-4 minutes on every "fill in the blank" question because she was reading the entire passage word by word. I showed her that 빈칸 questions can usually be solved by reading only the sentence with the blank plus one sentence before and after. Her time per question dropped from 3 minutes to 1 minute. She went from finishing 30 out of 40 questions to finishing all 40 with time left to review.
Strategy 1: Read the Question First, Always
This is the golden rule. Before you look at the passage, read:

The question — What are they asking?
2.
The answer choices — What are your options?
Why? Because now you know what to look for. You're not reading the passage to understand everything—you're reading it to find one specific piece of information.
Think of it like this: if someone hands you a newspaper and asks "What's the weather tomorrow?"—you don't read every article. You scan for the weather section. Same principle.
Strategy 2: The First-and-Last Technique
For "main idea" questions (중심 내용/중심 생각), you often don't need to read the whole passage:
1.
Read the first sentence — this usually introduces the topic
2.
Read the last sentence — this usually states the conclusion
3.
Skim the middle only if needed
Korean writing tends to follow a clear structure: introduce the topic → develop it → conclude. The first and last sentences carry most of the weight.
Example:
First sentence: "한국에서는 계절마다 먹는 음식이 다릅니다." (In Korea, the foods people eat change with each season.)
Last sentence: "이처럼 제철 음식을 먹는 것이 한국 음식 문화의 특징입니다." (Like this, eating seasonal food is a characteristic of Korean food culture.)
Main idea? Korean food culture emphasizes seasonal eating. Done. You didn't need the middle paragraphs about specific seasonal foods.
Strategy 3: Time Checkpoints
Without time management, it's easy to spend too long on early questions and run out of time for later ones. Set mental checkpoints:
TOPIK I Reading (40 questions, 60 minutes):

If you've been staring at a question for more than 2 minutes and you're not close to an answer, here's what to do:

Eliminate any answer choices you know are wrong
2.
Pick the most likely remaining option
3.
Mark the question (circle the number or put a star)
4.
Move on immediately
Come back to marked questions only if you finish everything else. One hard question is not worth sacrificing two easy ones.
Strategy 5: Pattern Recognition for Common Question Formats
Advertisements/Notices (광고/안내문):
These appear in early TOPIK I questions. They're short, visual, and test specific details:

Strategy 6: Vocabulary Shortcuts
You won't know every word. That's okay. Here's how to handle unknown vocabulary:

Strategy 7: Order-the-Sentences Questions (순서 맞추기)
These questions give you 3-4 sentences that need to be arranged in logical order. Here's the system:
1.
Find the sentence that introduces the topic (this goes first—it often starts with a general statement or definition)
2.
Look for connecting words: 그래서 (so), 그런데 (but), 그리고 (and), 그러면 (then)
3.
Check for pronoun references: 이것 (this thing), 그 사람 (that person)—these refer to something already mentioned
Real moment: Order questions used to terrify one of my students. She'd read all four sentences, scramble them in her head, and get confused. I taught her to just find the first sentence (the introduction) and the last sentence (the conclusion), then check which order the middle ones go in. She started getting these right consistently. "It's like finding the first and last piece of a puzzle," she said. "The middle fills itself in."
Reading Speed Practice
The best way to get faster is deliberate practice. Here's a 2-week routine:

The Answer Sheet Hack
A small but important tip: transfer your answers to the answer sheet as you go, not at the end.
Some people answer all questions in the test booklet and then try to transfer everything at the end. This is risky—if you run low on time, you might not transfer your last answers. Fill in the answer sheet after every 5-10 questions instead.
What If I Don't Finish?
Even with perfect strategy, you might not finish every question. That's okay. Here's the damage control plan:

With 5 minutes left, stop working on the current question
2.
Count how many questions you haven't answered
3.
For unanswered questions, pick the same answer for all of them (statistically, this gives you ~25% right)
4.
Return to any marked questions if time allows
Getting something on the answer sheet for every question is always better than leaving blanks.
