What Koreans Often Say Instead of "I Love You"
If you learned romance from English movies, you might expect Korean couples or parents to say "I love you" all the time. Then you come to Korea, watch real conversations, and notice something different. People do say 사랑해 (saranghae, I love you), but not always as often or as casually as English speakers might expect.
That does not mean Koreans are cold. It usually means affection is also shown in other ways: through care, small questions, practical help, food, and everyday concern. In many Korean relationships, warmth is often felt before it is loudly announced.
So what do Koreans say instead of "I love you"? A lot, actually. Some expressions sound romantic. Some sound ordinary. Some barely sound emotional at all — until you understand the context.
First, Do Koreans Ever Say 사랑해?
Yes. Absolutely.

One of the most common emotional phrases in Korean is 보고 싶어.

Real moment: Your partner is on a business trip in Busan, and you are in Seoul. You text at night: "오늘 왜 이렇게 보고 싶지?" (oneul wae ireoke bogo sipji? — Why do I miss you so much today?) That sounds natural, warm, and emotionally real.
2) 밥 먹었어? — "Did You Eat?"
This is the classic example learners remember because it sounds so simple.

That does not mean every 밥 먹었어? is deeply romantic. Friends say it. Parents say it. Coworkers say it. But inside close relationships, it can feel very affectionate.
A lot of affection in Korean can sound practical.
3) 조심히 가 / 조심히 들어가 — "Get Home Safe"
Korean affection often shows up at the end of a meeting.

Real moment: After a late dinner date, one person gets into a taxi and the other sends a message right away: "조심히 들어가. 도착하면 연락해." (Get home safe. Text me when you arrive.) No one said "I love you," but the feeling is there.
4) 네 생각 났어 — "I Thought of You"
This phrase is simple and very sweet.

English speakers sometimes miss how warm these phrases can sound.

Love in Korean is often action first.

A college student calls home. The conversation is short.

Again, no big speech. Still love.

Fourth, context matters. The same phrase can sound ordinary from one person and deeply affectionate from another.
