# Why 같이 Sounds Like 가치

The Korean word 같이 means "together" or "like/as." But when you hear Koreans say it, it often does not sound like gat-i. It sounds closer to gachi, like 가치.

This is normal. The spelling stays 같이, but the natural pronunciation changes.

## Spelling and sound

Write: 같이

Natural sound: 가치 / gachi

Meaning: together, like/as

Do not write 가치 when you mean 같이. 가치 is a different word that can mean "value." For this lesson, 가치 is only showing the sound.

## Why the sound changes

같이 is made from 같 + 이. The final consonant ㅌ meets the vowel sound 이. In Korean, ㅌ + 이 often sounds like 치.

So 같이 is spelled 같이, but pronounced closer to 가치.

This sound change is called palatalization. The name is technical, but the listening rule is simple: when ㄷ or ㅌ meets 이, it can sound like ㅈ or ㅊ.

## Common examples

같이 — gachi — together

끝이 — kkeuchi — the end is...

밭이 — bachi — the field is...

해돋이 — haedoji — sunrise

The important habit is to separate spelling from sound. Korean spelling often shows the original form, while natural speech changes when sounds meet.

## 같이 in real sentences

같이 가요 — gachi gayo — Let's go together.

같이 먹어요 — gachi meogeoyo — Let's eat together.

저도 같이 갈래요 — jeodo gachi gallaeyo — I want to go together too.

같이 공부해요 — gachi gongbuhaeyo — Let's study together.

친구같이 편해요 — chingu-gachi pyeonhaeyo — It feels comfortable like a friend.

In all of these, write 같이 and listen for gachi.

## A listening tip

When you hear gachi in a drama, café, or conversation, ask yourself: "Could this be 같이?" Very often, it is.

You may hear:

같이 갈래요? — Do you want to go together?

우리 같이 해요 — Let's do it together.

Because 같이 is such a common word, this one pronunciation rule gives you a big listening boost.

## The spelling stays 같이

The key is simple.

Write 같이.

Say gachi.

Understand "together" or "like/as."

Do not force the written sound too strongly. Korean becomes easier to hear when you accept that spelling and natural pronunciation are connected, but not always identical.
